D&D NPC Workshop

NPC workshop 2.0

Build a Memorable D&D NPC

Tune any detail on the left. The table-ready character statblock on the right updates immediately while every untouched choice stays random.

Character workshop

Every Detail, Your Choice

Race and gender guide naming conventions. Identity, role, personality, mood, scars, wealth, appearance, ability scores, and 2024 combat details all begin on Random and remain editable. Villain mode adds objective, scheme, method, and weakness.

Every dropdown starts on Random. Custom fields are optional; leave them blank to keep their generated result.
Identity

Comma-separated naming tables; blank tables use the workshop fallback.

Ability Scores

Leave any score blank to roll 3d6.

    How to use

Start random, then lock in what matters

A complete NPC appears on page load. Change one or several controls to shape that character; blank custom fields continue using generated values. Race and optional gender use race naming tables. Homebrew race supports custom naming tables, size, speed, and lifespan. Custom text is validated and rendered as escaped plain text.

Random results remain stable while you tune another detail. The current workshop is saved in this browser. Export NPC JSON saves the resolved character; Backup workshop also preserves editable choices for confirmed import in another browser. Backups include DM-only notes.

    FAQ

    Frequently Asked Questions

How does Random work in the NPC Workshop?

Every selector starts on Random and resolves when the page opens. Changing one control keeps the other resolved details stable; use Reroll all random details for a fresh character.

Can I use homebrew NPC details?

Yes. Choose Homebrew for ancestry or occupation, then enter a short custom value. Custom names and appearance notes are optional, validated, and safely escaped when rendered.

Can I move an NPC Workshop to another browser?

Yes. Backup workshop saves both editable choices and resolved random results. Import workshop validates the file and asks before replacing the NPC saved in the current browser.
